Intensified efforts to improve severe storm warnings and to foster disaster preparedness are planned by federal agencies during the coming fiscal year. Expanded weather services to aviation also are projected. The newly published ‘Federal Plan for Meteorological Services and Supporting Research: Fiscal Year 1974’ includes activities of all federal agencies conducting such programs.
Programs planned for the coming year would cost $504,659,000, an increase of $22,032,000 over fiscal year 1973. For the most part the increase would be used to take advantage of modern technology, including computers, satellites, ocean buoys, automatic weather stations, remote sensing, and automated datahandling techniques, in order to provide improved weather services with reduced manpower.
