Abstract

Over 300 composite ‘false-color’ satellite pictures that include most of the major urban areas in the United States as well as selected locations around the world are now available for purchase, according to a new bimonthly catalogue of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Each picture, available as color prints or transparencies in sizes from 10×10 inches to 40×40 inches, covers an area of about 13,000 square miles. The pictures were prepared from simultaneous exposures in three wavelength bands taken by NASA's Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS 1). The exposures were combined to provide false-color pictures in which vigorous vegetation appears bright red, clear water as dark blue, silty water as light blue, and bare fields, roads, and housing clusters as varied shades of white, gray, and light blue.
