Abstract

An 8-inch 9-track magnetic tape containing data that express the topography of California plus an accompanying report was released recently by the U.S. Geological Survey. The tape and report, the result of a 3-year cooperative effort of scientists of the USGS California Division of Mines and Geology, the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center, USAF, and several universities, were originally intended to help interpret measurements of the pull of gravity being made in California.

The data on the tape will be of immediate use to oil and mining companies conducting geophysical surveys in California and may also have applications in environmental studies such as predicting wind currents and controlling air pollution.
