Kitt Peak National Observatory astronomers report the first evidence that a new 11-year cycle of solar activity has begun. Observations with the McMath Solar Telescope late last August revealed an active region at high latitudes on the solar disk with magnetic polarity opposite to that of active regions during the present cycle. This and two other types of magnetic evidence of the onset of a new cycle were reported in the December 1, 1973, issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters.
