Abstract

A perusal of published papers dealing with the theory and technology of direct measurement of soil water movement in the zone of aeration indicates that several promising measurement methods have been developed but remain essentially untested. Only a relatively small number of investigators throughout the world have yet taken the opportunity to try these methods.

Knowledge of the effects that events at the soil surface may have on the rate of water movement through the zone of aeration can be an important tool in managing the quality and quantity of groundwater through control of the recharging waters.
