All-weather, 24-hour wave observations for the Pacific Northwest may soon be possible, according to Sea Grant researchers at Oregon State University. A device that measures earth movements caused by ocean waves is already helping to prevent boating accidents and may some day prevent oil spills.

Research oceanographer William H. Quinn believes the technique is especially significant in view of the construction of the trans-Alaskan oil pipeline and the probable increase in oil tanker traffic along the coast. ‘Good wave observations will be essential to oil tankers as they enter our coastal waters and harbors,’ he says.
