Most members of AGU are not familiar with the inner workings of the organization. Every two years about a third of the membership send in ballots for officers of the union and the sections and trust that their choices will attend faithfully to union affairs—and, hopefully, refrain from raising dues. Some more active individuals vent their opinions on actions by editors of the journals and their misgivings about our mass meetings. In the process, union and section presidents get some exposure. Also, to the advantage of all concerned, they change every two years.
