At the Twenty-Fourth International Geological Congress (August 1972) a group of geologists and geophysicists interested in the application of the geomagnetic polarity time scale to stratigraphic correlation met to discuss the requirements of the problems involved in setting up a nomenclature system that does not conflict with present stratigraphic terminology and usage.
Two meetings were held. As an outcome, a formal membership was set up and was subsequently recognized as a subcommission (on the magnetic polarity time scale) of the International Commission on Stratigraphy of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).
