The American Geological Institute's scholarship program for geoscience majors from minority groups (mainly blacks, American Indians, and students with Spanish surnames) is going strong, with 23 AGI minority students receiving support ranging from $250 to $2000 for the current academic year. Money to support the scholarships came from 6 member societies (including AGU with a $2000 donation); 8 mining, oil, and geophysical companies; and many individuals.
AGI expects to award about the same number of scholarships, ranging in amount from $500 to $2000 each, for the 1975–1976 school year. Geoscience majors with good academic records who are enrolled at accredited institutions may apply. Both graduate and undergraduate students are eligible. Scholarship recipients will be selected by an advisory committee and recommended for approval by AGI's executive committee. Selection will be based on academic excellence, need, and prospects for success in the geosciences.
