A challenge

To raise the level of interest in Russian translations, it is necessary to markedly increase the percentage of American earth scientists who read the original literature. I propose that AGU consider a major campaign to emphasize and promote a requirement that all students who intend to pursue a research or academic career in earth-science-related subjects be required not only to demonstrate a knowledge of written Russian, but to be familiar with pertinent Russian work in their areas of specialization.

It is time at long last to shake academicians out of their pre-World War II attitudes toward the relative importance of the German and French languages. Russian works in earth science are over 50% of the world total; total English language works are around 30%, French 8%, and German 7%.
