President's page: Building the AGU

Topical meetings permit organized and in-depth exploration of specialized subjects in a manner seldom possible at the large annual meetings; they encourage interdisciplinary focus on special problems in a way that is inhibited by the multi-session format of the annual meetings. They also can provide timely encouragement to the development of newly emerging research fields and problem areas. The limited size facilitates informal discussions and subsequent further communication among workers and students in related but separate fields. Recognizing the importance of these topical meetings and the tremendous pervasive contributions of Sydney Chapman to our disciplines, the Council designated that future AGU topical meetings should be called Chapman Conferences.
