Chapman Conferences: Guideline for Conveners

  • Anonymous

The Chapman Conferences are intended to promote scientific progress in the numerous areas of the physical sciences encompassed by the American Geophysical Union. The conferences are named in memory of Sydney Chapman, 1888–1970, who in his distinguished career made significant discoveries in many disciplines, including earth and atmospheric science; ionospheric, magnetospheric, interplanetary, and solar physics; and more. Chapman approached the ideal in grasping the unity of nature, in yielding to empirical requirements, in applying basic principles freely and successfully across traditional disciplinary lines, and in his piercing analytical ability.
