Basic research is being squeezed, tightly squeezed, in the United States by decreasing federal expenditures as emphasis is placed on relevant research, research applied to national needs. Dollars that have traditionally been spent on basic research are no longer available. And how can one argue against this; after all, scientists too must serve the national interest. There is no question but that the application of some of the best minds of science to immediate social problems is in the national interest, but to what extent is it in the national interest to trim basic research to gain this application?
