Abstract

Recent events in the world food market have highlighted the present urgent need for restoring and maintaining adequate food reserves. Drought and subsequent famine on the Indian subcontinent and in the sub-Sahara region have demonstrated the gravity of the present world food situation and the extent to which it depends on climatic influences. Climate plays a crucial role in a nation's viability. A nation that cannot feed itself must be able to obtain food from producing nations or suffer epidemic disease, famine, and loss of inhabitants by death or migration.
