USGS and the metric system

Abstract

The U.S. Geological Survey is committed to a complete conversion of its topographic mapping program to use of the metric system, although it will delay conversion in states that want the USGS to first complete current mapping programs using conventional units of measurement.

‘Common use of the metric units of measurement in the United States has been a long time coming,’ said Robert H. Lyddan, chief of the USGS Topographic Division. It was 111 years ago that Congress first authorized its use. The trend toward metrification has gained momentum with passage of the Metric Conversion Act of 1975, even though the act does not make conversion mandatory, nor does it specify a timetable.
