As part of the U.S./USSR Joint Committee on Cooperation in Studies of the World Ocean, a panel on geology, geophysics, and geochemistry met in Moscow in June 1977 to discuss two proposed cooperative international programs. One is to compare properties of the lithosphere and asthenosphere beneath both continental and oceanic areas, and the other is to study the tectonics of the Northwest Pacific region. A general plan of experiments was developed with agreement that the proposed programs would be refined by a, joint meeting in February 1978. In the interim there is opportunity for input from a broad range of U.S. scientists who have an interest. The programs are described briefly as follows.
