Abstract

In the first effort of its type, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has launched a longrange research project into the national problem of shoreline preservation.

The team of researchers on Sea Grant funds will investigate sand movement along selected coastal areas in the first multidisciplinary effort to carry out coordinated research over a 4- to 5-year period. With a better understanding of the mechanics and physics of sediment entrainment and transport along with specially developed engineering data, the Sea Grant researchers hope to correct some of the problems of shoreline preservation. They also expect to create engineering models for predicting sediment transfer along a straight coastline where significant financial losses have been suffered.
