MIT meteorologists look at sea and air

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) meteorologist Reginald E. Newell, reviewed in MIT's Reports on Research, suggests that monitoring ocean temperatures as well as volcanic eruptions may allow scientists to make 6-month forecasts of average atmospheric temperature in the tropics.

The temperature value that the MIT method predicts is an average over 14 stations situated between 20°N and 20°S latitude at altitudes from 7 to 10 km.
