Abstract

At the invitation of the Israeli Academy of Sciences and Humanities the Twentieth Plenary Meeting of COSPAR was held in the Pal and Grand Beach hotels in Tel Aviv during June 1977. Four specialized symposia preceded the meeting: COSPAR/IAU Symposium on New Instrumentation for Space Astronomy, SCOSTEP/ COSPAR/IAU L. D. de Feiter Memorial Symposium on the Study of Traveling Interplanetary Phenomena, COSPAR/IAU/IUB/IUGG Viking Science Symposium, and COSPAR/ IAMAP W. Nordberg Memorial Symposium on the Contribution of Space Observations to Global Food Information Systems (organized in collaboration with the Food and Agricultural Association (UN) and the World Meteorological Organization). The program for scientific sessions of the symposia and open meetings of the COSPAR working groups and panels included over 400 papers. Thanks to the efforts of the Israeli National Committee, the conduct of the above events went very smoothly; the rich social program offered by the organizers permitted the participants to learn more about the host country and to establish new and interesting contacts.
