This spring the multiple-mirror telescope (MMT) at the University of Arizona (UA) will receive ‘first light.’ This $8 million experiment in ground-based astronomy combines light gathered by six identical 72-inch mirrors to provide the light-gathering capacity of a single 175-inch mirror at about half the cost.
If the MMT is successful, others could be built that would exceed the 236-inch telescope, the largest single reflector that has yet been built.
