As the search for oil and gas is extended into deeper parts of the ocean basins, the small fossils and chemical variations in sediments used to determine the age of sedimentary layers become of more and more practical interest.
A four-year project called Cenop, for Cenozoic paleooceanography, will concentrate on subjects ranging from the evolution of polar glaciation to the effect on life of changes in the ocean.
