Wide Field Camera Team for space telescope named by NASA

A scientific team led by James Westphal of the California Institute of Technology is designing the Wide Field Camera for the Space Telescope. Designed to detect a wide spectrum of light from ultraviolet to infrared, the camera will use charge-coupled devices (CCD's) as its fundamental light-gathering units.

Four square arrays of CCD's, each 800 units by 800 units in size, will receive the image from the telescope and beam it to earth as a string of radio impulses. The other camera aboard the space telescope will be the Faint Object Camera, which will have a higher resolution but a smaller field of view.
