Volcán Fuego (Guatemala) has been active since September 11, 1977, and emission of black to gray ash continued through March. No direct observations of the lava flows described in May EOS, page 454, were available, but incandescence in the summit area was seen during the evening of February 26 and before dawn on March 30. After daybreak on March 30, the most vigorous pyroclastic activity of the month produced as ash cloud 2300 m high, substantial ashfall on the upper north flank, and a hot avalanche which flowed down a canyon on the east flank. Occasional felt seismicity continued.
