Abstract

The sun is brighter now than it was at the birth of the solar system 4.7 billion years ago, according to theories of stellar evolution. Furthermore, the solar flux then was only about 70% of the present-day solar flux.

If the climate of the earth is as sensitive to solar change as the latest models propose, the earth of 4.7 billion years ago would have been covered with ice. However, there is much geological evidence to suggest that the earth never has been covered by ice and that in fact the climate has remained relatively stable.
