The Twenty-Third Soviet Summer Expedition has started construction of an airfield near the Soviet Molodyozhnaya Observatory. It will be the first airport to operate year round in Antarctica receiving heavy transport wheeled planes. The airfield will also improve transportation between various stations, observatories, and field groups. To build a strong and durable runway, the engineers have designed a machine which presses the snow and fuses it with ice with injections of hot air. The cover produced this way is expected to have the strength of concrete.
