A continuing concern of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) is the effective utilization of young scientists who gain their degrees through federally supported research. We want to know what is happening to individuals graduating from our universities and to make better information available to young graduates about the research climate and opportunities in their respective fields. E. D. Goldberg of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography suggested that it would be useful to have a symposium which would be completely dedicated to soon-to-be or recent Ph.D. graduates; after discussions at some length with members of the scientific community we began preparations for such a meeting in the field of chemical oceanography.
