Abstract

Many observational systems are now operational for the Global Weather Experiment of the Global Atmospheric Research Program (Garp). The Global Weather Experiment (formerly called the First Garp Global Experiment), to be conducted during 1979, will obtain the most comprehensive set of weather data ever gathered. The coordinated international effort will augment the existing World Meteorological Organization (WMO) World Weather Watch observational system, focusing particularly on additional observations in data-sparse tropical oceanic regions.

Two special observing periods (SOP's) have been scheduled in the year-long experiment period, during which both in situ and remote observational systems will be operated by many countries.
