The Geology and Geophysics of the Geysers Geothermal Area Field Trip on Sunday preceding the 1978 Fall Meeting was full. The bus trip to the area 70 miles north of San Francisco featured detailed discussion of the geology of the area, glimpses of differing strata in road cuts, and a useful summary/handout on the Geysers area.
The AGU bus was met by two representatives of the Union Oil Company, which operates numerous generating plants on the geothermal steam. The Union representatives provided everyone with copies of a July 31, 1978, Fortune article detailing Union's continuing geothermal development plans. Currently drilling the Imperial Valley and the Los Alamos area, Union is western states.
