U.S. planetary exploration program

Geoffrey A. Briggs, who is the Deputy Director of NASA's Planetary Division, Office of Space Science, recently described in a ‘Dear Colleague’ letter what he considers is a less bright future for U.S. planetary exploration. This disheartening view may come as news to many scientists who are aware of the enormous achievements of the space program in recent years. Within the last four months, Briggs notes, there has been the continuing success of the Pioneer Venus mission, followed by Voyager I's encounter with Jupiter (articles on the Jupiter mission will appear in a Juneissue of Science).
