Abstract

Studies of ground motion caused in the Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Provo, Utah, areas by underground nuclear tests suggest that a moderate earthquake in the region could cause significant damage.

Walter W. Hays, USGS seismologist, Golden, Colorado, said that the studies indicate that soils in some parts of the Utah urban corridor along the Wasatch fault are susceptible to enhanced ground shaking in case of a moderate or stronger earthquake.
