The second annual June Bacon-Bercey Scholarship in Atmospheric Sciences for Women has been awarded to Michelle V. Piepgrass, a first-year graduate student at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the University of Arizona who plans to do research on atmospheric electricity or atmospheric radiation. Piepgrass' parents moved to Guaymas, Mexico, when she was five, and she attended Mexican schools through high school. She majored in physics and mathematics at Linfield College in Oregon, where she became interested in atmospheric sciences as a sophomore. During the summer of 1978, she assisted with staff research at the National Center for Atmospheric Research prior to beginning work on her masters degree in January of 1979.
