On August 29,1979, the Coast Guard icebreaker Westwindpenetrated further into the arctic ice cap than any other American icebreaker in history, coming within 375 miles of the North Pole.

Westwind is conducting an intensive 7-week oceanographic study of the icebound waters off the northern coast of eastern Greenland between 76° and 81° north latitude, an area known as a major outlet for frigid arctic currents and vast ice floes.
