Abstract

The strong earthquake that shook the San Francisco Bay region 2 months ago (Richter scale magnitude 5.6 on August 6, 1979) is being studied intensely to extract as much information as possible from the tremor in anticipation of expectable future earthquakes.

A team of geologists and geophysicists from the U.S. Geological Survey continues to conduct field studies of ground cracks and other physical evidence and to study instrument data from hundreds of tiltmeters, magnetometers, and seismographs.
