On-Take Volcano, Central Honshu, Japan (35.90°N, 137.48°E). AH times are local (GMT + 9 hours). On-Take's first eruption in historic time began early on October 27. Vapor emission apparently started at about 0500, then, at about 0800, activity strengthened to emission of a 100-m high steam column accompanied by ground rumbling. Just before noon, a tephra column that included ash, lapilli, and bombs up to 1 macross was rising 1500 m, and ash was falling on the east flank. Tephra clouds were ejected about every 2 min during the afternoon.
