Chatanika Facility

Authors

Abstract

I was pleasantly surprised to see the photograph of our Chatanika radar facilty on the cover of EOS, 60(44) In case any EOS readers write to inquire about the facility, I thought I would provide you with some information.

The Chatanika facility is an incoherent scatter radar used to perform research on the neutral atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere. It was established in 1971 with funds provided by the Defense Nuclear Agency. Currently, it is supported primarily by the National Science Foundation, with a number of other agencies (DNA, AFOSR, NASA) also sponsoring research. SRI International (formerly Stanford Research Institute) manages and operates the facility. Scientists representing 29 organizations from throughout the world have performed experiments at Chatanika or have been provided with data.
