At its December 2 meeting, the AGU Council passed a motion ‘to remove the differential page charge and have authors transfer copyright to AGU to extent permissible by law.’ The Executive Committee has ordered rapid implementation of this action. The action was taken to eliminate any perceptions of inequity in the page charge rates for authors employed by the U.S. government, who have no copyright to transfer for papers prepared as part of their official duties. During 1979, papers on which the copyright was not transferred to AGU were subject to a page charge comparable to the full first-copy cost, which for a typeset paper in JGR was $120 per page. For typeset papers in JGR, authors transferring their copyright to AGU have been subject to a $90 per page rate since August.
