Abstract

The newly elected president of IUGG is George D. Garland of the Geophysics Laboratory, University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The 54-year-old Garland will serve as head of the bureau for the period 1980–1983. He has held three other IUGG offices, including assistant secretary general, secretary general, and vice-president.

Garland describes his field of interest as solid earth geophysics, with a past emphasis on gravity interpretation, isostasy, and terrestrial heat flow, and a present interest in electromagnetic induction in the earth and study of the earth's electric conductivity.
