Joseph V. Smith of the University of Chicago has been named the recipient of the 1980 Murchison Medal, one of the most prestigious geological honors. Smith was given the award by the Geological Society of London ‘in recognition of (his) distinguished contributions to crystallography, mineralogy, and petrology.’ The award was established by Sir Roderick Impey Murchison, a contemporary of Adam Sedgwick and Charles Lysell.
