Abstract

Richard S. Fiske, volcanologist, has been named director of the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of Natural History. He succeeds Porter Kier, a paleobiologist, who returned to research in June.

Hal Langford, 54, of Arlington, Virginia, has been appointed associate chief hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey. He succeeds Milton Hackett, who held the position from 1968 until he retired in January.
