This review assesses present knowledge and understanding of water quality problems and attempts to relate these to research capabilities, needs, and changing priorities. The analysis is admittedly not exhaustive. The selectivity in the topics discussed reflects current relevance and, to some extent, the expertise and interest of those contributing to this treatise.
