Report from IUGG Assembly: IAGA session on dynamics of the thermosphere and ionosphere and effects on composition

The symposium demonstrated the most satisfactory progress that has been made in recent years, largely through the application of ground-based radar and optical techniques and the exploitation of satellite data bases. Progress in theoretical interpretation has stemmed largely from the development of sophisticated computer modeling, and hopes were expressed that adequate computing time will be forthcoming to complement suitably the huge investment represented by the data. The symposium comprised over 30 papers, about one third of which were 30-minute invited reviews; some of the shorter contributed papers were supplemented with poster displays, and this practice should be encouraged in the future. In this brief overview, only a few individual papers can be mentioned.
