As an active AGU member (female) I find C. T . Russell's letter (EOS, June 3) discomforting at best, if not downright offensive. Nothing in my experience suggests to me that my male colleagues are any more or less competent to speak for me or other female AGU members because of their sex. Russell might attribute this circumstance to either extreme naivete or extreme good fortune; I think such a scriptions would be in error. I fail to see what Russell's unenumerated ‘statistics past’ have to do with ‘the best candidates at this point in time.’ But more importantly, I believe strongly enough that the scientific objectivity of my colleag ues has nothing to do with sexuality that I must defend them against insinuations to the contrary. I know they would do the same for me.
