Hale Observatories divide

Authors

Abstract

California Institute of Technology and the Carnegie Institution of Washington have announced top level changes in the administration of their observatories. In the past, one director supervised the combined operations of Caltech's Palomar and Big Bear solar observatories and Carnegie's Mount Wilson and Las Campanas (in Chile) observatories. The two institutions have separated administrative functions, and in the future each will have a director for its own facilities. However, the institutions will continue to share research facilities and cooperate in research projects and the day-to-day activities of the observatories.
