An additional 30,100 tons of thorium reserves and 23,200 more tons of probable resources of. the radioactive element thorium occur in the United States, according to a new U.S. Geological Survey report. The report updates last year's initial and partial resource assessment.
The USGS and the Bureau of Mines estimated last year that the principal known deposits contain 693,000 tons of thorium and that an additional 2.2 million tons occur in disseminated deposits. With the new report's findings, the total of thorium reserves equals at least 2.94 million tons.
