Lightning on Saturn possible

Authors

Abstract

Evidence of lightning on Saturn is ‘promising and suggestive,’ according to a member of the Voyager 1 plasma wave experiment team. Two sets of signals that sound like ‘whistlers’—the long high-pitched sounds in the upper atmosphere that accompany lightning—were detected by Voyager. In addition, lightning may be present within Saturn's rings. Further analysis is required to confirm the evidence, however.
