Depending on what yardstick is being used, earthquake activity around the world may be running slightly ahead of average, according to a U.S. Geological Survey scientist. Then again, earthquake activity may be less than average.

Waverly Person, a USGS geophysicist in Golden, Colorado, said that by one count the number of significant earthquakes around the world is slightly ahead of last year and ahead of the long-term annual average.
