Air-sea response to storms

Ocean response to major storms will be investigated in a 2-month field project sponsored by the United States and Canada in the Gulf of Alaska. Dubbed the Storm Transfer and Response Experiment (Strex), the project began in mid-October. Central to Strex is a newly developed buoy system which, together with ships and aircraft, measures the interplay between air and water during storms.

The buoy system's measurements in the upper levels of the Gulf of Alaska will give scientists their first substantial data on air-sea interaction during severe storms, according to James C. McWilliams at the National Center of Atmospheric Research's oceanography section.
