Comets' role in life's origin

Did comets dust the primordial earth with cosmic debris and with bacterial life forms that evolved to the organisms which dot the fossil record and stalk the earth today?

Head-to-head debate on this question was recently rekindled at the colloquium ‘Comets and the Origin of Life’ at the University of Maryland's College Park campus. The colloquium drew geochemists, biologists, physicists, planetologists, and others.
