AAUP reports less than inflationary raises

The salaries of university faculty in the U.S. (including arts, sciences, and graduate faculties) have increased, in most instances, by less than the annual inflation rate. In the recently issued ‘Supplementary Tables to the Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession’ by the American Association of University Professors, salaries and compensation for faculty members increased last year by about 7.5%. The average salary for AAUP member institutions for the academic year 1979–80 was $25,000. This salary is an increase of only about 30% over the past 10 years.
