Arthur Maxwell, a Fellow and past president of AGU, left his position last week as provost at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) to become the director of the Institute for Geophysics at the University of Texas at Austin.
Maxwell had been at Woods Hole since 1965, serving in the positions of associate director (1965–1969) and director of research (1969–1971), before his appointment as provost. In 1955, he joined the Office of Naval Research as head oceanographer. Four years later he was put in charge of the geophysics branch, an appointment he held until he went to Woods Hole.
